“During this fire I moved from shaking me neighbors hand to giving him a bearhug at fire briefings. I learned names. I recognized that my short piece of creek flows into theirs. That my forest connects to theirs. That their home is my home and what happens to a piece, happens to the whole. Friends, let’s not forget this. Let’s cherish this. Let’s celebrate it. As much as our America is built on rugged independence, it’s rooted in blessed community. True democracy asks us to make wise individual choices, weighed with its impact on the whole. Happy Independance week. It will never be or mean the same.”
